About sixty percent of the total area of the state is covered with hills and jungles and the rest is plain-land.

Location of Tripura

The tiny and hilly state of Tripura is situated in the North Eastern region of the Country. It lies to the South East of Assam and to the East of Bangladesh. It is located between 25*56’ and 24*32’ North Latitudes and between 31*10’ and 92*21’ East Longitude. The state covers with national & inter national boarder an area of 10,477 sq km. Its length of inter national boundary line with Bangladesh measures 839 km and national boundary with Assam and Mizoram are 53 kms & 109 km respectively.

The physical surface of the land is dotted with hills and hillocks, shallow and narrow valleys. The hill ranges of this state are Jampui, Longtrai, Sakan, Atharamura and Baramura. The average height of all these ranges are between 1000 ft and 3200 ft. The hill ranges of the state can not be stated as mountain status as its highest peak Betlingsib only 3200 ft high which is situated at the Jampui hills, North Tripura district. Eye stop beautiful scenic green cover hill and its famous yellow gold oranges ever touch the heart with joy to every visitors. The people of the hill enjoy the romantic spring all the year long. And the spring never ever leaves the hill.

The name Tripura has been coined from the Tripuri words – · TUI and PRA . .In Kokborak, the dialect of the Tripuris, TUI means WATER and PRA means MEETING POINT. In this regard it is believed that originally the land was known as Tripura meaning a land where a number of water sources are present.

At present the state covers an area of 10,486 ·squire kilometers. The records, however, show that earlier the area of the state was quite large and it was 74,000 square miles that is 1,20,000 square kilometers. At present, three sides of the ·state are surrounded by Bangladesh covering a total international boarder of 845 kilometers and only by its ·north- eastern ·part the state is connected with the rest of the country.
