Fairs and Festivals of Mizoram

The traditional repertoire of festival, folk and community dances offers visitors a delightful insight into the tribal heritage of Mizo culture in all its richness and variety. Surprisingly, some of the most popular dances, such as the Cheraw (bamboo dance), Khuallam, Solakia and Chheih Lam, were never created for the stage. Rather, they evolved spontaneously out of community spirit and participation.

Mizos are agriculturalists and they practice Jhum cultivation. All their activities, celebrations and festivals revolve around agriculture and jhum cultivation. The main festival is Chapchar Kut or Spring Festival celebrated after jhum operations.

Mim Kut is another festival celebrated in September while Pawl Kut is a harvest festival celebrated in December. These festivals however faded with the popularity of Christianity. Chapchar Kut In local Mizo parlance, kut means festival. The three Kuts are Chapchar Kut, Mim Kut and Pawl Kut. All the three festivals are connected with agricultural activities. The festivals are celebrated with feasts and dances. Chapchar Kut celebrates the arrival of spring. Christmas: It is a traditional holiday in the Christian calendar and the most auspicious and holistic Christian festival observed across the globe on December 25th with much fanfare.December 25th is celebrated as birth anniversary of Lord Jesus Christ, who is believed to be born on the same date at 7 Bethlehem, the land of Jews. The festival is celebrated as a mark of respect to Lord Jesus, who is considered as the son of God and founder of the Christian religion. Mim Kut Mim kut is an annual festival celebrated in the state of Mizoram. More than a festival it is a vibrant and colorful cultural fiesta that is celebrated with great fun and frolic. Mim Kut is basically a Maize Festival and is very important as far as the fairs and festivals of Mizoram are considered.

CHAPCHAR KUT

This annual festival is usually held on the first Friday in March. It is a time when visitors get a chance to see the local people in their rich ceremonial costumes. The traditional dress, jewellery, exotic headgear and weapons worn by the representatives of all tribes in Mizoram showcase the most colourful aspects of Mizo culture. The most important dance on the programme is the famous Cheraw or Bamboo Dance.

The Spring Festval or Chapchar Kut is an important occasion in Mizoram. Men and women of all ages, wearing traditional dresses and headgear, perform folk dances and sing traditional songs on this occasion. Drums, gongs and cymbals add to the festive air.
